In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we are sending a fun update to our financial advisors. Here are 10 fun facts about golf. Have a happy Thanksgiving, and may it be surrounded by friends, family, and holiday cheer.

Golf is a popular pastime among the wealthy. It involves a large upfront commitment to purchase a membership at a golf club, in addition to large upfront costs in gear and perhaps lessons. Add the cost of renting a golf cart, and the bill for participating in the sport is quite high. For this reason, as a financial advisor, knowing a thing or two about golf is a valuable conversational asset in the high-rolling social circles you may find yourself in as a financial advisor.

1)      Modern day golf was invented during the year 1457 in Scotland (A). This far predates E-sports, which made their debut in 1972 (B).

2)      Alan Bartlett Shepard played golf on the moon (A). Wonder how he managed to convince NASA!

3)      Before golf tees came around in the 1920s, players would shape mounds of sand and place the golf ball on top (A).

4)      The average golfer has a 12,500 to 1 chance of making a hole-in-one (A).

5)      A score of three under par is called an albatross (A).

6)      The chance of making two holes-in-one in a single game is 1 in 67 million (A).

7)      A golf ball will travel farther on hot days, because the air is less dense. This also applies at high altitude (C).

8)     The term “birdie”, came from the expression, “bird of a shot” (D).

9)      The highest golf course in the world sits 14,335 feet above sea level. It’s in Morococha, Peru (D).

10)   The longest golf hole in the world measures 909 yards. It’s in Japan (D).
